WHAT CAUSES BUNIONS?
by Jeff Gray, C.Ped. Superfeet Director of Education and Training
A common misperception is that bunions are hereditary. It's really not the bunion itself, but the degree of rear/midfoot pronation you are born with that is hereditary. High heels are also often blamed as bunion instigators, but it's mainly ill-fitting shoes and the shape of the shoe itself that help accelerate the growth of a bunion.
Because a bunion is simply a symptom of excessive pronation in the rearfoot, it's very important to use a supportive insole or orthotic that is designed to stabilize your heel area. Once the rearfoot is stabilized, you are less likely to experience excessive motion or friction in the forefoot and the ball of the foot, where bunions usually occur. It's equally important to make sure that your shoes have plenty of room around the common bunion growth area. Sacrificing comfort for style in shoes that increase friction, rubbing or pressure at the ball of the foot just isn't worth a bunion later!
Why does excessive motion and friction in the forefoot cause bunions? Because when direct pressure is put on a bone in a joint area, fluid build-up and soft tissue inflammation occur, and soon the bone starts to grow. The appearance of a bunion lets you know immediately that the area is experiencing too much motion, instability, and friction.
The best news about bunions is that they are preventable. By understanding that pronation of the rear/midfoot predisposes the forefoot to bunion symptoms, you can treat your pronation before you have to treat a bunion.
